Look out for the ...- rhythm of the words (how it sounds)
- the frequency of the words
- choice of words (that stands out to you)
Understand
- the meaning of sentence or words or speech
- the intention (Why did the script writer write those lines?)
- why is the character saying those lines
- who is the character saying those lines to
- what emotion is the character feeling at that moment
Apply
- Emphasis
- The purpose of emphasising words to help to bring the point better.
- Depending on the words you emphasise, it could mean a different thing (a different message).
- Timing
- Both the emphasis and timing (to articulate or prolong enunciating certain words) can change the mood. It can either increase tension (suspense) or make it humourous.
- Remember to take your time and not rush through the lines. (There must be a reason why that line is included in the script.)
(Extras) *Reseach needed*
- The Era of the play (Especially Shakespeare's work)
- It will indicate to you the context (background info) or the situation back in those days (era) which will aid in your understanding of the text.
Remember everyone has a unique style (or way) to approach the same text (or script)!

Understand
- how the character feels about the text or script. Is it an important matter to him (character)?
- how hard is it for him to say these lines
- the action. (what is he doing at that point in time. )
- clues to deduce the appropriate action ... read before and after the scene.
- you'll find that an action will change the delivery of the lines.
Main goals in acting
- make it seem like a real situation. If the actor was indeed the character he would have done or reacted the same way.
- make the play come to life
- make it interesting, captivating for the audience to want to continue watching and giving you their attention.

Attack it a different way
Look out for the ...Understand
- it's more than just memorising lines, you need to know how to say them (how to deliver those lines)
- the energy level
- Be aware and play around (experiment with it) to find out which energy level is the most situation for which part of the script or line.
Apply
- (Method/ Technique) do the scene in a whole complete different (or opposite) way than you are used to.
- This is to help to figure out your range of delivering the lines. After which you can find a suitable balance between that range.
- To test or figure out your range, you need to go deliver lines from extreme ends of emotions. E.g Extremely Happy to Extremely Sad
- Instead of letting it out, try to keep your emotions in
- Seek other people's opinion, ideas or feedback on your piece (by performing it for them)
- This will help improve your delivery of the performance as your friend/ the other person might inspire you or give you a great direction or idea.
*(Note) Be humble, open to hearing feedback or criticism. Don't get defensive, let go of your ego.
(Extras)
- For directors
- it's important that you help you actors achieve the artistic direction that you desire by giving you situation for them to be able to relate to.

Give them 50
Understand- what is at stake? (what might the character be losing here?)
- if there's a deeper meaning other than the obvious message (especially if the character is telling a story)
Apply
- give 50%
- Keep the tension
- "Sometimes if you keep your emotions in, you make the audience feel for it (make them want it)."
- When you perform, don't make it (your acting) too obvious (as it can get boring if everything is too literal).
- Sometimes, if you restraining part of things that you want to show to the audience (means not showing everything), the audience would crave (and want) to know more.
(Extras)
- Set the stage or situation
- Don't be in such a haste to deliver your lines. You can be doing something (an action) to indicate to the audience of the setting the character is in. Establish the scene (location, the task at hand) would improve the impact of the delivery.
- Voice change
- Use a different tone if you're ever playing 2 characters at once or playing 2 roles. One distinction that needs to be made is the tone of voice for each character. The other would be the body language (how the person behaves, acts, or walks). You want the audience to able to distinguish which character you're trying to play.
- Choosing a monologue
- Ask yourself why are you choosing this monologue, do you feel for the topic or piece?
- Is it a suitable monologue for you? (Can you relate to that age group and that experience or topic covered?)

Mask work - Becoming Someone Else
Look out for the ...-
Understand
- the character (Characterisation work)
- Ask questions to find out more about the character's age, background, belief, interest, hobbies, likes, dislikes and etc. This will give you an idea of how the character would act in a given situation.
- (Body movement) Is there any physical deformity? What would be the character's body language?
- The better your characterisation work is done, the easier it is for you to get into the character's role.
Apply
- ( Method/ Technique) Using a mask
- When you wear the mask, everyone else would assume that your actions are a result of embodying a character.
- Can be used as an excuse to freely act or behave a certain way without facing any form of judgement that might damage your personal image.
(Extras)
- Distinction
- There must be a clear distinction between you and the character that you are playing. The audience should not be confused whether or not you're acting as yourself or some other character.
- Having a good characterisation work done will solve this issue.

-
Apply
- (Method/ Technique) Looking at the mirror
- Become more aware of your own body language and facial expression (if not wearing mask)
- Effective for people who are fidgety (who keeps moving around), this method will help them to stay more grounded.
- As you become more aware about about yourself (including body and facial expression), you would also give more attention to your lines. How you're going to say (perform) it? You'll start to process the script lines and ultimately finding a piece where you can mean your words.
(Extras)
- It's often to find fidgety actors who move around for the sake of moving (or when they feel like it). Every move, expression and action should have a meaning (or purpose). Questioning yourself ("Why am I walking right now") should help figure out when (to move), where (to move), how (you should move) and etc.

Apply
- Try to utilise the stage space as much as possible (but don't walk aimlessly)
- (Skill) Select or choose words to emphasise
(to avoid mumbling so that audience can hear you clearly)
- Mumbling happens when actors race through lines (words). To curb this habit, try to emphasise and enunciate words that are crucial but yet often being mumbled.
- Choose keywords that can help transmit the scriptwriter's intention (or the message of the play). You can't emphasise everything (or the purpose of the emphasis will lose its meaning)

- Sit on your hands
- Too often we think that words are not enough thus we overuse actions to compensate. Using this method, you will discover moments where you feel the need to emphasise or reach for something in a physical way. That will help you identify which words to emphasise and which part of the script requires an action or gesture. This is helpful for people who use too many
